When the wise men brought gifts to young Jesus, He probably didn’t realize at the time the value of what they had brought to Him. But just because He was too young to grasp the significance of who they were, how far they had come, or the value of the gift each brought to Him, didn’t diminish the gifts. It most likely wasn’t until He was older, when His earthly parents would recount to Him the amazing events of His birth, that He could appreciate for Himself what He had received.
And though the little ones that you serve each week don’t realize it, your gifts to them every service are much the same. There are gifts of great value that you bring to them every time you are together. If you could receive a letter from your “Future Few”, here’s what I think they would say.
Dear Small Group Leader,
Little did I realize what amazing gifts you brought to me each week when I came to your class. Now I want to tell you what they meant to me:
You gave me your time. Of all the elements in our universe, I have learned now that time is of all most precious and fleeting. You only had a measured amount, that ticked away steadily and continually as each week passed. Yet you chose to give me some of it every week. This is something I can never repay. I can only say that those minutes formed a foundation of trust that I have been building on ever since you helped lay it.
You gave me your heart. You listened to my heart and when it was hurting or empty, you poured from yours into mine. Each week you loved me; you cared about me. And even when we were not together, you still thought of me and prayed for me and my family. And when I grew older and I left you to go to another, with a few tears, you sent a piece of your heart with me.
You gave me seeds of faith. While I couldn’t take your faith, I had to have my own, you lived out your faith in front of me. Just as seeds from a flower will fall to the ground around it, your seeds of faith fell all around me. Those begin to grow in my heart and gave me glimpses of my Heavenly Father and His love for me. My heart is fuller and richer because of the early start these seeds gave me.
Now I can understand and I want to thank you for what you are giving me each week. Though I may only say “Thank you” now when I’m prompted by my parents at the door as I leave each week, know that one day, I will be most thankful;
That day is today!
One of Your Few
Much like modern day wise men, you are bringing your gifts to your few. And, while it’s true, your few are not the Son of God born as a baby, but that doesn’t make the gifts any less important nor you any less wise. You can say like the Apostle Paul in Corinthians 3:10,
“I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it.”
